PoCo Heritage donated the canvas to artists from Art Focus to paint scenes from PoCo. Historical Context of the PoCo Poladium/Palladium attached to DOG: "Port Poladium Roller Rink" "The Port Poladium Roller Rink was the brainchild of Harvie and Nel Forrest, who understood the recreational value of having somewhere for the youngsters of Port Coquitlam to spend time and enjoy. Contained in two World War 2 Quonset-style huts built at the corner of Chester and Fraser, the Poladium's grand opening took place on May 3rd 1952. Besides skating, the rink was also used as a dance hall, with music groups such as the Delta Swingsters providing entertainment for the adults on Saturday nights. On January 22nd 1954, the Port Poladium burned to the ground in a spectacular fire that had 18 members of the local Volunteer Fire Brigade battling the blaze for 5 hours. Their efforts were hampered by the extreme cold weather, that had the water in the nearby fire hydrants frozen. It would be another 16 years until Porty Coquitlam built a Rec Centre for its citizens in 1970." |
